In 2019 Art Block released a debut acoustic album, a collection of songs recorded in a day at The Premises studio in Hackney and mastered by the legendary Pete Maher (U2, Pixies, Jack White, Newton Faulkner). The eminent folk guitarist Ben Walker produced his ‘Borderline EP’ which was released to critical acclaim.
2021 will see new singles and an EP by the prolific London singer-songwriter teaming up again with Ian Barter who used to be Amy Winehouse’s guitarist and musical director. One of those new singles is ‘Patriot Song‘ which will be released on 11th June.
“The song was inspired during lockdown. The melody and chords came to me a lot earlier than the lyrics. I always felt that the song was a bit of a paean to London, hence the opening line, “The Thames does flow, inside my soul…” I was born in London and have lived here all my life. I wanted to write a song to describe that in some meaningful way.”
“I’m particularly proud of this song as we recorded the strings part under a very tight time limit. Maria Kroon, the violinist on the recording, literally had an hour and a half to put down strings parts to two songs. Ian Barter, my producer, did an amazing job at recording all her parts in such a short space of time. There was no room for error basically and we had only one rehearsal on zoom beforehand.”
“There is a video recorded in a beautiful church in Hackney, St John’s, the location of my previous releases ‘Brother‘ and ‘Eliza‘. It is available on YouTube. Again because of lockdown the live performance is unrehearsed and it was the first time Maria and I played the song together.”
